"Bade bade deshon mein ..."

When studying abroad, stuff happens. Stay prepared.
A medical emergency, delays in your university course, an accident, a personal liability from an unforseen incident – in a foreign land, these are not choti choti batein. A comprehensive overseas student travel insurance plan is your best bet for security and peace of mind, especially when everything seems to be going wrong. And at the cost it comes for, it is far cheaper than paying a fortune and blaming bad luck.
An international student travel insurance takes care of medical costs which, when converted from international currency, can run into lakhs of rupees. To cover the bills, some families have even had to sell their family silver. And that is not an overstatement.
To further strengthen the plan, you can use riders (add-ons) such as cover for university sports injuries, mental and nervous disorders, and (for females) protection for maternity and child birth-related complications. All this for just a few thousand rupees more.

What are Student Travel Insurance Plans

Some absolute basics on how these plans work
An International Student Travel Insurance Plan is an insurance cover for students who are going abroad specifically for the purpose of study. It is just like a travel policy but often for a higher duration because it is related to an educational course. At MintWise, the highest duration you can buy a student travel insurance plan for, is 4 years (including extensions). Also, unlike a basic travel insurance policy, it comes with a lot of benefits which are included keeping students and their requirements in mind.
Only students who are Indian nationals can buy an international student travel insurance plan offered by an Indian insurance company.
Before the trip : When the student is in India before the trip starts.
Extensions : When the student is abroad and want to extend her/his existing student travel insurance policy.
New policy when already abroad : A new policy when already abroad, with the condition that the policy would start on the date of buying the policy.
All Indian insurers may or may not offer any of or all the above options. Compare to check who does.
The best way to buy a student travel insurance policy is Online. You get the best value through guidance on what to look for in the plan, detailed comparison of all options in the market, highest premium discounts, a clear view on plan exclusions and most importantly, assistance if there is a claim. And that's why we are here.

Calculating Premium for your Student Travel Insurance plan

What determines the Premium you pay for your Insurance?
Mainly because of very high medical costs, premiums for student overseas travel insurance to cover international courses in United States of America (USA) & Canada are far higher (by about 50-90%) than the rest of the world. However, it is still just one-third of the cost if you were to buy from abroad.
Longer the duration, longer is the cover and hence higher the cost. But you do get some discounts when you buy for a longer duration. You may also buy for a specific duration now, and then extend it later online. We can, of course, help you with that as well.
Unlike other insurance products, international student travel insurance does not depend on your gender, or on whether you are a smoker or not. As long as it is not United States (USA) & Canada, the premium for other countries is generally the same. Some countries may offer rates that are slightly higher for Schengen Area (26 member countries in Europe namely - Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Liechtenstein)

Student Overseas Travel Insurance - Custom-made for the Indian Student

What makes insurance cover offered in India worth it?
Indian general insuranceand health insurance companies offer a wide range of benefits through international student travel insurance plans. Tie-ups with International Agencies have ensured that Indian students studying abroad get the best of services in case of a claim. Ranging from Medical Insurance, Hospitalization benefits, Travel-related services and even Liability Cover, products available in India come complete with core benefits and also the bells and whistles.
As a student, here are some top benefits that are offered as part of International Student Travel Insurance policies. Understand them to know which are the one that you must have when you buy an International Student Travel Insurance plan.

 Sponsor Protection

Since most courses abroad are expensive, most students have a 'Sponsor', i.e. a person who funds the education abroad. The completion of the course depends on the well-being of the Sponsor. With Sponsor Protection benefit in your International Student Travel Insurance plan, in the case of an injury from an accident leading to death of the Sponsor, the Insurance Company will reimburse the Tuition Fees incurred for the remaining period of his overseas education up to the Sponsor Benefit Sum Insured.
Sponsor Protection benefit is extremely critical to have in your overseas student travel insurance policy if you are being sponsored by a parent or relative.

 Study Interruption Cover

While we are generally well-prepared for our studies abroad, a study interruption can happen for the most unforseen resasons. This could be anything from a lengthy hospitalization, medical repatriation/evacuation to home/other country, or sometimes death of an immediate family member can cause you to cut your studies short mid-way into your education course.
Most international student travel insurance products offer study interruption protection either in the base policy or as an add-on at extra cost. In case of a claim, the insurance company would reimburse the unused part of the tution fees already paid to the university on a pro-rata basis.

 Bail Bond

In a foreign country, especially if you haven't stayed there before, there could be a lot of rules, laws and regulations that you might not be aware of. And it could just happen that you break the law unknowingly and get arrested! Don't think of it as impossible - the cases are many.
If your International Student Travel Insurance plan covers you with a 'Bail Bond', then in case you are arrested or detained by the Police or judicial authorities when abroad, and if the offence is bailable, then the amount up to the specific Sum Assured will be provided (generally directly) to the appropriate authority or Court as bail amount towards the arrest or dentention.
We hope you never have to use this benefit. But it helps when you know that your insurance covers you for that.

 University Sports Injury

If you are an international student who plays sports, especially contact sports, such as football, basketball, etc. you may realize that your student policy normally excludes coverage for such athletic activities. This is because students who participate in such sports are constantly pushing their bodies to the limit and are taking on a greater risk of injury than students who are not. In such cases, getting your policy to cover you for university sports is critical since besides the suffering and the healing time, the financial repercussions of an injury (say a major limb injury or a head injury) can be really serious.
University sports, as generally defined in insurance terms, includes intercollegiate, interscholastic, intramural or club sport participation. If the sport you play requires organized practices or events, if you have a coach, or if you are likely to sign up for the sport through your school or university, it is most likely an organized sport. Make sure you don't start a game on foreign soil without getting a university sport injuries cover as part of your international student travel insurance policy.

 Personal Liability

Personal Liability cover is one of the most important features to look for in your international student travel insurance plan.
Imagine you are driving a car in a foreign country and had an accident. Or accidently injured someone or someone's property. Or in an extreme case, someone got killed owing to your fault (even if it is accidental). Such as situation is pretty serious especially in countries such as US, Canada, UK and Europe, and you would be legally required to compensate for the loss of property/life.
With Personal Liability cover, in the event of your becoming legally liable to a third party under law for an incident which results in death, injury or damage to the health of such third party or damage to her/his properties, an amount not exceeding the Sum Insured for Personal Liability is paid directly to the affected party. Remember, this could be in lakhs of rupees (equivalent to thousands of dollars). Shelling this out on your own could cost you or your family an entire lifetime's savings. So make sure you do not leave India without this benefit in your student travel insurance plan.

 Compassionate Visit

There have been several cases of Indian students contracting illnesses in a foreign country. Sometimes such illnesses are serious and/or need a long period of hospitalization. In addition to treatment at the hospital, it is sometimes required that you need a personal friend / relative / family member to be by your side. It just makes you feel better and recover faster.
With Compassionate Visit benefit, in the event your being hospitalized for more than 7 consecutive days (could be different depending on your plan), and your medical condition does not allow repatriation to India, and if no adult member of your immediate family is present, then the insurer after obtaining confirmation of need for a companion from the attending doctor, will provide a) a round trip economy class air ticket, or first class railway ticket, to allow one immediate family member (your Mom or Dad, say), during the entire period of insurance, to be at your bedside for the duration of stay in the hospital, and (b) expenses towards the person's stay during this compassionate visit.
Now, doesn't that sound really comforting?

 Medical Transportation

An illness or an injury sometimes requires that you are attended in a more suitable / better facility in another country or in your country of residence in concurrence of your family members. This is a decision taken depending on the criticality and circumstances of your illness / injury by the doctors in the hospital that you are admitted to.
Under such a situation, if medically necessary, the insurance company would arrange and/or pay to 1) transport you to the nearest appropriate medical facilities, and/or 2) transport you home as part of or after a medical evacuation.
Medical Transportation and Evacuation is not a very expensive benefit and we strongly recommend that this feature is added to your plan, if it is not already inbuilt.

 Repatriation of Mortal Remains

In the unfortunate circumstance when death occurs during your trip, the costs and logistics of preparing and returning your remains back to India can be an additional burden to your family, relatives or friends. e.g. If it happens in the US, the total cost is likely to be in the region of US$ 5,000 - US$ 8,500. Repatriation of mortal remains refers to the transportation of mortal bodily remains to the country of residence of the covered individual. Depending on the location of the country that the body is in, this will be done by air, water or ground. Typically insurance plans include this benefit when the insured individual has a covered illness or injury that results in death.
It would be wise to have this included in your international student travel insurance policy if not included already.
